Self-driving Future
At the recent Shanghai General Motors Gala Night, Chevrolet surprised attendees by unveiling their concept of what a self-driving electric automobile could be. Dubbed the Chevrolet-FNR, it features a capsule design with ‘dragonfly’ swing doors that open upwards and ‘crystal laser’ headlights.
Developed in partnership with GM’s Pan Asia Technical Automotive Centre (PATAC) based in Shanghai, it is the brand's vision for mobility of the future, one that offers a unique design that (they hope) could attract younger consumers while still being anchored on innovative car networking technology.
Among its more novel features are a magnetic hubless electric wheel motor with a wireless autocharging system, sensors and roof-mounted radar to be used on self-driving mode, and the ability to turn the vehicle on and off with your eyes through iris recognition.
Concept Car
The FNR car is at the concept stage, with no release date nor production dates slated in the near future, but it does highlight how even mainstream automotive companies are exploring advanced technology to expand their portfolio of electric cars.
It also underscores the increasing possibility of electric vehicles for mass adoption as more and more brands announce their commitment to develop a varied and diverse range of automobiles designed to address lifestyle
need and make it more accessible to consumers.
